Your book/movie comments are so subtle that even when I've read/watched them I sometimes have no idea what you're referencing.
The online predator thing started when we switched away from dial-up and kids that were not computer hobbyists started gaining access to computers round the clock...So I'm pretty sure the book came after. Though the notion of strangers sealing away children by promise and temptation is as old people. It's pretty much popular literature through the ages.
